How clients ask

"Who's a good personal injury lawyer in Oakland?" "Estate planning attorney in Los Altos for a blended family?" AI now answers these with named firms. We help yours be one of them, within the State Bar's advertising rules. Legal questions to assistants are long and specific, because the client is describing their situation. Bay Area AEO's demo questions for law firms show it:

  1. Who's a good estate planning attorney in Palo Alto for a family with a house and stock options?
  2. Personal injury lawyer in San Jose for a car accident
  3. Divorce attorney in Walnut Creek who handles high-asset cases
  4. Immigration lawyer in Fremont for H-1B to green card

Each question pairs a practice area with a city and a circumstance: stock options, a car accident, high assets, an H-1B. A firm is named when its pages describe that circumstance and its credentials confirm it handles that work.

Procedure

  1. Map the practice

List each practice area and the common matter types within it, in the words clients use: "divorce with a family business," not only "dissolution."

  2. Write the practice pages

For each matter type: who it is for, how the process works in California, typical timelines and what the first consultation covers.

  3. Build the attorney table

For each attorney: bar admission and number, education, years in practice and recognitions, matching the State Bar profile.

  4. Complete the directories

Claim and complete Avvo, Justia and Martindale-Hubbell profiles for the firm and each attorney, with practice areas in the same words as the site.

  5. Publish guidance

Write plain-language guides on California law questions clients ask, each reviewed by an attorney and dated.

  6. Review for compliance

A supervising attorney reviews every page, bio and directory entry against the State Bar's advertising rules before it goes live.

Working within the advertising rules

Bay Area AEO's law firm page commits to helping firms be named within the State Bar's advertising rules, and this procedure builds the same check into every step. California's Rules of Professional Conduct govern lawyer advertising, including the rule against false or misleading communications. In practice that means describing services and credentials accurately, avoiding guarantees of outcomes, and having an attorney approve published content. Factual, well-sourced pages fit both the rules and what assistants reward, since AI responds to clear, consistent, truthful information.

What makes guidance citable

Assistants answering a legal question often cite a plain explanation of the law before naming a firm. A firm whose guide explains, for example, how property is divided in a California divorce, with the attorney's name and a review date, gives the assistant a source to cite and a firm to name in one place. Keep guides general, mark them as information, and link each one to the practice page where a reader can ask for a consultation.

Reviews and confidentiality

Client confidentiality applies to replies. Thank the reviewer without confirming any detail of the matter, and never respond to a review with information about the client. The review request itself can invite clients to describe the kind of help they received and how the firm communicated, while reminding them not to share private details.

Done when

Firms with several attorneys

When a firm has several attorneys, each one's bio page should state the practice areas that attorney handles, so an assistant can connect the right person to the right question. Keep the wording identical between the bio, the directory profiles and the State Bar record for admissions and dates. Link each bio from the practice pages where that attorney works, and each practice page back to its attorneys.

The consultation page

Many client questions end with an implicit next step: who do I call? A short page explaining the first consultation (how to book, how long it lasts, whether there is a fee, what to bring and which languages the firm works in) answers that step and gives an assistant a practical detail to include.
